“It’s interesting to see when a child walks in the room, whether it’s your child or anybody else’s child… Does your face light up? When my children used to walk in the room when they were little I looked at them to see if they had buckled their trousers or if their hair was combed or if their socks were up. And so you think your affection and your deep love is on display because you are caring for them, but it’s not. When they see you, they see the critical face and think “What’s wrong now?” But if you let your face speak whats in your heart, because when they walked in the room I was glad to see them. It’s just as small as that you see. It was a lesson I had to learn from my own children. Does your face light up? Do they see in your eyes that your really glad they are there? ” Toni Morrison

I don't get to see my mom more than once a week because my parents are divorced, and my mom STILL acts like I'm 5 years old even though I'm 18 when she gets to see me. I often let myself get annoyed by her treating my like a kid...but I should be more empathetic to the fact that I'm still her child even though I grew up and she misses me. I'm sure that I will one day face the same thing when I have kids.
ReplyDeleteMy parents still treat me like a child and I have a child of my own and another on the way. This will never change, not even when you are 50 and they are 80. Time goes by so fast and before you know it it's 15 years later. I'm sure she feels like it was just yesterday she was bringing you home from the hospital. I have to deal with this one day, I'm cherishing every moment I can with my daughter. Taking as many mental snapshots of beautiful moments. Life is beautiful because the moments are so fleeting.
